william yunshan (永山) is a eurasian bricoleur, descended from hakkas and highlanders, assembling speculative compositions to loosen and reweave the thick present.

This series explores how automatic image-making techniques can prompt different ways of noticing and attending to the image environments surrounding us. The pieces were created through custom software which algorithmically recombines images from online image archives and public domain collections. It thus investigates how software and online platforms can extend, mediate and modify “automatic” compositional techniques experimented with by surrealist artists, in particular Gherasim Luca‘s method of “cubomania” through which images were dissected into squares and re-arranged to create new composite images.
